Still recruiting

In addition to all the jobs posted at OpenHire, my company is still looking to hire people, some of which would would work with me.

  • PHP programmers (Jr & Sr)
  • Data warehousing specialists
  • Visualization specialists
  • Systems analysts

Let me know if you are interested or know of someone who might be interested.

You’re going the wrong way

Level 19

I am sharing an office with a friend and our large white boards would not fit on the available walls, so we improvised by making them vertical. The instant I saw them installed I knew what had to be done. Click the thumbnail for the full size image.

Update:
I made it onto the front page of EpicWin!! As of Sept 20 there were 642 thumbs up and 31 thumbs down for it (probably the people who are not thinking with portals).

Update2 (20101004):
915 up, 45 down.

OSCONfusion

So I have spent the past week in Portland, OR at the O’Reilly Media’s OSCON 2010 and learned some useful things for my job, but it has also generated a fair bit of dissatisfaction.

The fun talks were more on the geeky side, like how to build a device to monitor the environment. It would be fun tostick a box on my parent’s dock to monitor Cayuga Lake’s water temperature, or better yet to make a small radio telescope and record the data.

In-between the very geeky things was a lot of rather boring stuff, so boring that I wonder what my role is in the programming world. Sure I can build large web-database applications that meet the needs of international health care research. Sure I can add little widgets to display pretty charts. Is this what I want to do? It was often more fun reading the ModRef magazine I brought. It does not help that a lot of people in the programming community think an open bar is the most exciting part of a convention. I really do not want to smell the partially digested alcohol on your breath. It is not pleasant.

S3

I found what looks to be an excellent opportunity as a Principle Systems Software Engineer at Social & Scientific Systems, Inc.. I will still be in the clinical informatics realm, but now supporting a company whose primary focus is on AIDS trials in Africa and breast cancer in the US. In several respects this is a challenging step up for me, and I am thankful that God made everything work out. Thank you all for your prayers!

Bad Decision

Well, it looks like the Decision I posted about on Sat Aug 16 2008 might not have been the best decision. I decided to stay under the promise that I would extend the system I had worked on for 2 years to work for all the studies at the center. I guess the adage “a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush” does not apply here somehow. So, I am on the job hunt for good positions in the Maryland I-270 corridor. sigh

Decision

I made a decision. My office has opened a position on the DPP project. I will serve as the web developer 25% of the time. My remaining time I will be creating BSC core web systems for all of the studies.

It is nice to have that decision behind me. Several of the offers I got would have fit me well also, so it was a hard choice.

Options Update

I thank God that he has given me a couple options to go from here regarding my career. I have received two formal offers from good companies. My current employer, the GWU Biostatistics Center wants me to stay and hopefully will provide me a clearer picture of what that would look like very soon (i.e: please tell me tomorrow). Now, unfortunately, I must agonize over a decision. Thank you all for your prayers during this season.

God answers prayer

But not always with the answer we would like. I learned this morning that the competitor received the contract to be the coordinating center for TrialNet.

What this means for me: I have no idea at this point what my official termination date will be. I really do not have much to do as the majority of my work was new development, which has been halted. I will be kept on staff for a little while in case there are questions. Right now there are no other positions in my office that relate to my skillset, so I have begun the job search in earnest.

Camille and I are continually reminded of God’s faithfulness, in taking us to Ithaca, then down here to be with all of you. We are confident that His grace will continue to sustain us in this uncertain time.

Big Spring Update

Here is the run down for the past couple months:

  • Anne graduated from Preschool today. She had two excellent teachers this year and is sad to be done. Makes me wonder if she will be like Jason in Foxtrot. She was very beautiful in the dress her Grandma got her.
  • We have been house hunting and found what we hope will be our next accommodations. We put in an offer which was accepted, but contingent on the sellers closing on another house. It has been a while since we bought a house, but amazingly enough, I think the process is even longer in Maryland compared to NewYork.
  • Anne got pneumonia today. Very sad. So she will be taking antibiotics for a little while. No clue where she got it from and we hope that no other kids get/got it.
  • I started another blog revolving around my coding for the MMORPG I play. Knowing me, I will probably update that one more than this..
  • We are getting plugged into our church. I have been periodically helping lead the home group we go to. We love our home group, and we have felt warmly accepted into the community. I managed to get out skiing once with some of them. I think I will miss winter down here.
  • Work continues to go well. Just hired someone to work under me and in the process of hiring another (in case anyone wants to send me a resume). I am really enjoying the Zend Framework but unfortunately I had to drop the smarty templates as they were killing the speed. Our hardware has killer I/O but awful CPU speed.
  • On my daily commute I have been reading a very good book: As For Me and My House. I wish I had read it while in grad school. I know it would have helped me better understand myself and the stresses I place upon Camille. Better late than never. It is written in a very poetic style (not my style) which took a bit to get used to. While at home, I have been reading Fit Bodies Fat Minds. Another highly recommended read. It is not poetic and more my reading style.
  • We have not gone to the movies in a while now. I think the last movie we saw was Children of Men. We did rent some interesting films though. An Inconvenient Truth, Who Killed the Electric Car, and Thank You For Smoking. They raise interesting questions, especially for a stats minded person like myself. The first 2 are more of the documentary type. The last one can get you thinking about how media and sophistry pervade and sway our culture.

So, hopefully Camille will post here soon to give everyone an update on some of the other important things going on in our lives.

A New Job

So, I have been getting settled into my new job. I accepted the position from George Washington University’s Biostatistics group to join them as a Research Scientist. I know you all want to bow down to me now with such a great title in front of my name. But don’t. I am only half a person until Camille and the kids can join me down here. Trying to get an apartment is rather lame, and so is an hour commute (after getting used to a 20 minute walk), but not nearly as lame as being away from the ones you love.
